Pregnancy Care
The symptoms women experience when going through pregnancy can be vast and ever changing.
Chiropractic care can help with managing this major change that occurs in such a short time frame. An awful lot changes in 9 months, and the body oftentime needs a little extra help dealing with the changes it goes through.
Understanding pregnancy pain
The main reason for seeking out chiropractic care during pregnancy is to help manage the natural increase in movement of the joints that a body goes through during this time. This is caused by a hormone known as ‘relaxin’.
Relaxin helps to loosen joints, muscles and ligaments in the body, most notably the joints of the pelvis, in preparation for delivery. This increased joint range of motion can cause increased pain and difficulty walking, bending or getting up from a seated position. Even though pelvic discomfort and sciatica tend to be the most common symptoms, headaches can also be a major source of pain as well.
Our treatment approach
My treatment approach when it comes to taking care of pregnant patients centers around comfort combined with gentle effective techniques. Traditional manipulation is oftentimes not needed due to the increased movement that is already occurring in the joints, this means that other low force methods can be extremely effective and comfortable for pregnant patients. This results in a pleasant and comfortable experience that patients enjoy combined with an effective treatment for their pain symptoms.
Additional therapies
In addition to chiropractic treatment, focusing on soft tissue symptoms is crucial for effective pain management. Since there is so much change occurring with the developing baby and movement of the joints in the body, directing attention to the surrounding soft tissues is imperative for effective treatment. Muscles and especially ligaments of the pelvis are important to observe and treat to help with proper pain management, all of course addressed with gentle and effective methods with the comfort of the patient in mind.
In addition to soft tissue therapies, exercise, stretching and bracing can be additional subjects that I enjoy helping patients focus on and provide guidance on utilizing.
